What is a Paithani Shela?

A shela is a long rectangular stole, typically 2 to 2.5 metres long, woven in Paithani silk. It is draped over the left shoulder over the saree. The shela is also worn by the groom - a matching pair of shela sarees is a beloved Maharashtrian wedding tradition.

Types of Bridal Shela

Pure Silk Paithani Shela

Woven in the same technique as a full Paithani saree - with peacock, lotus, or geometric motifs and a gold zari border. The most prestigious option for brides.

Semi-Silk Shela

More affordable, lighter, still beautiful. Good choice for guests and bridesmaids.

Nauvari Shela

A wider, longer shela worn over a Nauvari saree. Requires slightly different draping.

Choosing the Right Colour

The shela should complement, not match exactly, the saree colour:

• Red saree: Green or gold shela (classic combination)
• Purple saree: Gold or green shela
• Morpankhi (peacock blue) saree: Gold or maroon shela

Shela for the Groom

The groom's Paithani shela is typically gold or saffron with a geometric or floral border. It is draped over the right shoulder (opposite to the bride). A matching couple set - where both shelas are from the same weaver in complementary colours - is considered especially auspicious.
