Paithani Topi & Traditional Maharashtrian Caps

Paithani Topis are structured silk caps worn with traditional Maharashtrian dress - at weddings, sakharpuda and engagement ceremonies, haldi, pooja, and festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Gudi Padwa. They are worn by the groom, by the men of both families, and offered to honoured guests.

Topi or pheta - which do you need?

These two get used interchangeably, and the difference matters when you are buying.

  • Topi - a structured cap, ready to wear, no draping required. It holds its shape and sits straight on the head.
  • Pheta - a long length of cloth wrapped into a turban. Traditionally tied by hand, though pre-stitched phetas are sold ready to wear too.

Most pieces in this collection are topis. Where something is a pheta, its product page says so.

Choosing a colour

Maroon, saffron and gold are the usual choices for a groom and for wedding ceremonies. Peacock blue, emerald and turquoise turn up more at receptions and sangeet. Turmeric gold and off-white suit pooja and daytime cultural functions. Every product page lists its actual colour, fabric and price.
