Irkal Sarees

Irkal sarees are known for their checked bodies, contrast borders and the distinctive pallu treatment of the Deccan weaving tradition. The style takes its name from Ilkal in Karnataka, and it has long been worn across the Karnataka–Maharashtra border region, which is why it sits naturally alongside Paithani and Narayan Peth in a Maharashtrian wardrobe.

What to expect in this collection

  • Checks Irkal — all-over checked bodies, usually with a contrast border and blouse piece.
  • Irkal-style Paithani — sarees carrying Irkal patterning with Paithani detailing. The product page states which is which.
  • Silk and semi-silk — each product page gives its own fabric. We do not describe a saree as silk unless that is what it is.

Irkal or Ilkal?

Both spellings refer to the same weaving tradition, named after the town of Ilkal. Shoppers in Maharashtra tend to write "Irkal" and those in Karnataka "Ilkal", so we use both. Where a saree here is Irkal-styled rather than made in Ilkal itself, its product page says so.

Choosing one

Checked Irkal sarees suit festivals, family functions and daytime occasions, and are easy to drape. Heavier silk pieces with fuller borders work better for weddings and receptions. Prices here run from around ₹1,999 in semi-silk to ₹13,000 and above in silk.
