Paithani takes its name from Paithan in Maharashtra, and the weave dates back to the Satavahana period, when it was worn by royalty. The same zari borders and motifs that make the sarees recognisable work well at this scale - a potli uses a small piece of that fabric, which is why it costs a fraction of a saree while still reading as unmistakably Paithani.
