Yeola, in Nashik district, is the home of Paithani weaving. We source these sarees from local karigars and master artisans. In a pure silk Paithani, both the warp and the weft are silk, and the border and pallu are woven with zari motifs such as peacocks, parrots and lotus flowers.

Handloom or powerloom: what's the difference?

Handloom sarees are woven by hand on traditional looms. One saree can take weeks, the motifs are interlocked thread by thread, the pattern shows on the reverse side as well, and small irregularities are normal. They cost more because of the time and skill involved.

Powerloom sarees are woven on machine looms with pure silk yarn. The weave is even and regular, they are lighter on the pocket, and they suit festivals and family functions as well as gifting.

How to check pure silk at home

• Sheen: silk changes shade as you tilt it in the light.
• Feel: silk feels smooth and warms quickly in your hand.
• Burn test (on one loose thread only): silk smells like burnt hair and leaves a soft ash that crushes to powder; synthetic thread melts and smells like plastic.

Caring for your silk Paithani
